Position Objectives:

The Deputy Head of Junior School PYP, Learning and Teaching is a vital member of the College’s leadership team and as such is expected to set an appropriate example to staff and work closely with the Deputy Principal, Head of Junior School and other members of this team.

The Deputy Head of Junior School PYP, Learning and Teaching role is to promote, coordinate, resource and implement the Primary Years Programme in the College and to communicate with the International Baccalaureate and other PYP schools on behalf of the College.

As a school implementing the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Deputy Head of Junior School PYP, Learning and Teaching, Deputy Head of Junior School Pastoral and Deputy Principal, Head of Junior School form the pedagogical leadership team.

the Deputy Head of Junior School PYP, Learning and Teaching

  • is responsible for the development of the academic programme and the whole school implementation of the programme; and
  • ensures that the standards for implementation of the programme are understood and that the programme is planned, taught, and assessed collaboratively; and
  • Ensures the programme aligns with the Current Australian Curriculum and meets educational standards.

The Employee’s remuneration is paid at the classification of Proficient 9 with a 1.15 multiplier of the base rate. Other increments and all conditions are as otherwise prescribed in the Queensland Lutheran Schools Single Enterprise Agreement 2020.

Key Functions, Accountabilities, Responsibilities and Deliverables:
Learning and teaching oversight
  • Supervises P-6 Staff and students.
  • Responsible for the pedagogical leadership in the Junior School.
  • Assist staff in their understanding of the PYP framework, the Australian Curriculum and the Christian Studies Curriculum Framework.
  • In consultation with the Deputy Principal Head of Junior School, develop the SDS schedule.
  • Attend any Learning/Teaching meetings, representing the Junior School.
  • Liaise with Deputy Principal, Head of Junior School and Deputy Head of Junior School – Pastoral as senior members of the Junior School Leadership team.
  • Coordinate the development (where applicable), implementation and review of any routine or non-routine curricular matter, program or initiative, some examples are:
    • National testing
    • ICAS Competitions
  • Leads the process on reporting on general academic progress of students, teaching and learning practices and College future directions for the PYP and curriculum at
  • Conduct Parent Information Evenings
  • Keep up to date with latest developments in learning and teaching, evaluate them and implement those that will be effective.
  • Oversee, in conjunction with the Head of Junior School, the coordination and program effectiveness of Inclusive Practices.
  • At times, undertake a small teaching load
Junior School Administration
  • Be aware of, communicate, support and implement whole school values, aims, policies, objectives and practices.
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, parents and the wider community. 
  • Ensure that reporting to parents occurs efficiently and is of the highest professional standard.
  • Develop timetables, rosters and schedules as negotiated with the Head of Junior School 
  • Prepare relevant material for College publications. 
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested and directed by the College Principal or Head of Junior School.  
Junior School Staff
  • Support staff in understanding and pursuing whole school values, aims, policies, objectives and practices.
  • Provide appropriate professional development opportunities for staff – as they apply to PYP and curriculum.
  • Provide pastoral support for staff.
  • Communicate organisational matters to staff and obtain feedback.
  • Ensure that staff members are made aware of professional development opportunities.
  • Make recommendations regarding professional development opportunities on and off campus.
  • Support the teachers responsible for, and the students involved in the PYP exhibition in the final year of the programme.
  • Observe teachers in the classroom and give feedback for growth.
  • Organise Junior School relief staff as required.
Visioning, Goal setting and Promotion
  • Participate in any visioning activities that the College undertakes, and in the formation of the College’s strategic development plan.
  • Set annual goals for the implementation and review of PYP and curriculum matters in conjunction with the Head of the Junior School.
  • Promote PYP in the College community and beyond.
  • Network with the PYP community.
Programming and Documentation
  • Lead the process of developing/reviewing the school’s scope and sequence documents.
  • Assist teams or individuals in developing units of learning.
  • Assist teams or individuals on stand-alone units, how it relates to the teaching of Mathematics and English.
  • Ensure that copies of IB publications pertaining to PYP section of the school are available to all staff members.
  • Establish and maintain a record of completed planners.
  • Publish and promote College Programme of Inquiry.
  • Ensure that essential agreements are formulated.
Budgeting/Resource Management
  • Prepare a budget for PYP when the College budget is being compiled.
  • Make recommendations for the purchase of suitable resources to support the implementation of the programme.
Communication/Evaluation
  • Set up systems of communication and collaboration among all staff members involved in implementing the programme.
  • Conduct parent information sessions.
  • Publish articles pertaining to the programme.
  • Circulate all relevant information received from the IB.
  • Respond to requests for information (for example, questionnaires) from the IB.
Evaluation
  • Prepare and submit any documentation required for evaluation.
  • Ensure that all requirements of the IB concerning the implementation of the programme are adhered to.
Other Duties
  • Support and attend College functions (but not limited to)
    • Sporting Events on College calendar such as swimming, cross country, and athletics carnivals that relate to the Junior School
    • Cultural Award Evening
    • Year 6 Graduation Dinner
    • Presentation night
  • Oversee the administrative support personnel.
  • Deputise for Head of Junior School as required.
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested or directed by the College Principal or Deputy Principal Head of Junior School.
